CONTRACTORS’ CORNER | BUYERS’ GUIDE | PEOPLE ON THE MOVE REGULARS:

T he 2018 Women in Energy Conference, an interactive side event of the African Energy Indaba (AEI) will take place on the 19 th February 2018 at the Sandton Convention Centre. The fourth annual event of its kind, the conference aims to increase leadership and the development of women involved in the African energy space. According to the organisers, this one-day forum will provide a platform for advancing and promoting talented women within the energy sector. With top- ics covering themes such as a global perspective of women in energy, key future trends, and the way forward for women in the African Energy sector, the conference will discuss how to create a forward thinking and visionary workplace of the future. According to the Clinton Climate Initiative (CCI), there is a gender gap in leadership as women make up only 5% of board executives across the global power and utilities sector. Women’s leadership is essential for the task of building a sustainable energy future, and by not honing the es- sential skills of women worldwide, the energy sector is profoundly lacking in essential perspectives and innovation. The Women in Power and Utilities Index (2016) tracked the number of women in the boardrooms of the world’s largest utilities in revenue, and it was established that there are 16% women on Power and Utili- ties boards, with progress at an extremely slow increase of only 1% over three years. A Return On Equity (ROE) analysis on the top 200 utilities in the world indicated that the top 20 gender-diverse utilities substantially outperformed the bottom 20, endorsing an obvious connection between gender diversity and financial performance. Overall the energy industry is experiencing an era of transition and transformation, with new fuels, technologies and innovation motivating opportunities. A resilient, reliable and secure energy future is essential

for the stability of the global economy. This trend is keenly felt on the African continent where the development of renewable energy and energy efficiency schemes will create business opportunities, provide employment, and enhance economic development, enabling women to participate in the development of sustainable projects. The 2018 Women in Energy Conference offers an interactive hub that ena- bles leading women within the energy sector the opportunity to network, share knowledge and achievements, and encourage the further advancement of women across all sectors of the energy industry.

PERSONALITY OF THE MONTH: THEO MASHEGO

HARD WORK PRODUCES RESULTS

Netsurit where I consulted for companies like TBWA HUNT LASCARIS, NM Rothschild, MDM Engineering and Toga Labs amongst others. In 2014, I left Deloitte and Touche to start a business called Ayanda at Work, which later merged with Unidrive Electric Motors. Sparks: What are the greatest changes you have seen over the years? TM: For me personally, the greatest change has been moving from a career in IT, to running an engineering business. With the shift of the electrical industry towards digital, however, my IT background has been particularly useful. Sparks: What major projects have you worked on and what is your greatest accomplishment? TM: My major accomplishment was getting certification for Unidrive Electric Motors, especially ISO9001, which was a journey for me and for the business. Sparks: Have you won any awards? TM: Not yet. We have spent the past four years focusing on rebuilding the business and will start aiming for awards now. We recently became a WEG motors accredited repairer, which is a great start! Sparks: Who has been your inspiration, or have you had a mentor who has influenced your career? TM: Maurice Radebe, currently the chairman of Sasol Oil and Group Executive Committee member has been both an inspiration and mentor to me. I also had a mentor/coach in Jonathan Narayadoo, a retired Afrox executive. He has been key to the success of Unidrive. Sparks: What, to your mind, is one of the biggest challenges facing the industry at this time? TM: Eskom’s challenges and the corruption of SOEs. You may be surprised to learn that a small black owned company like ours only has clients from the private sector. We are a labour-intensive company, able to create employment, but have no support of government entities because of corruption. Sparks: What do you enjoy most about your job? TM: Working with people and impacting their lives. Mine is to take care of our staff so that they in turn are able to give excellent service to our customers. Sparks: How do you motivate your staff? TM: I motivate through engagement and incentives. I’m open with our staff and speak to them as a group, and individually. We focus on rewarding excellence. Sparks: If you could “do it all again”, would you change anything? If so, what would that be? TM: We invested a lot of money in our factory and to attain certification, to the point that we even used our Opex for Capex. I would not use Opex for Capex again - the impact on our cashflow was harsh. Sparks: Would you advise a person leaving school to enter the electrical industry? And why? TM: Yes, I most definitely would recommend that school leavers enter the electrical industry. It is a key trade of the economy and the skill is one you can use even if you are unable to find a full-time job.

Sparks: What is your advice to electrical contractors and/or electrical engineers? TM: Focus on the required certification and deliver a quality service, and you will grow. Sparks: What is your favourite quote? TM: Hard work produces results. Sparks: Name three things on your ‘bucket list’ (things you want to do before you ‘kick the bucket’). TM: I would like to lead a listed company; visit the seven modern wonders of the world and drive a Porsche.

Theo Mashego

THEO MASHEGO, managing director of Unidrive Electric Motors, took his place at the helm of the company shortly after it was acquired by Ayanda at Work. From a precarious financial position at that time (around 2013), Unidrive Electric Motors saw its turnover growing in double digits between 2015 and 2016, with further growth in 2017. A relative newcomer to the electrical industry, Theo – who lives by the motto ‘hard work produces results’ – quickly learned the ropes by re-examining the company’s product and service offering to ensure it was compatible with the markets it serviced, and ensuring that Unidrive achieved the necessary SANS certification. Theo sees a positive future ahead, enjoys working with people and hopes to visit the seven modern wonders of the world before too long. Sparks: Where were you educated? TM: Most of my education has been in IT and Business Administration and Management, much of it at the Wits Business School, though I have also done courses through UNISA and the University of LA Verne in California. Sparks: How long have you been involved in the electrical industry? TM: I have been involved in this industry for four and a half years. Sparks: When and where did you start your career? TM: After high school, I completed an Information Technology Engineering (IT Eng.) Diploma with CTI (now Pearson Institute of Higher Education). I have had the pleasure of working for various companies including Deloitte and Touche, Sun International, Digital Planet and

COMBINED TTR AND WINDING RESISTANCE TESTER IN ONE BOX

There are two interface options available. The externally-controlled model MWA300 is a ‘black box’ style package that is remotely con- trolled by PowerDB software running on an external PC (not provided). The MWA330A model features an optional built-in 12-inch touch- screen computer. PowerDB software provides the unit with a common user interface to minimise operator training and delivers a seamless interface to the computer application, PowerDB Lite (or Pro). PowerDB Lite software is included with the MWA3 Series. Typical end users of the MWA3 Series include power utilities, electri- cal testing companies and field commissioning, service and mainte- nance personnel.

THE MEGGER MWA3 SERIES Transformer Winding Analyzer is de- signed to perform transformer ratio and winding resistance testing in one box, quickly and efficiently. It is an advanced three-phase portable transformer test system that reduces set-up time, increases job-site safety and delivers improved productivity versus individual instrument testing. The unit’s light weight (15 kg) and small size (280 x 280 x 460 mm) make it 40% lighter to carry and easier to store. The MWA3 Series provides complete ratio, phase and winding resist- ance measurements for a three-phase transformer. All ratio and wind- ing resistance tests are performed in one instrument with one three- phase lead-set connection. Testing complex three-phase transformers becomes simpler with the MWA300 Series, as the operator uses one setup, one connection and one common test form for a consistent, easy-to-learn test method.

Enquiries: mesales@megger.com

The following tests are performed with the MWA3 Series, all with one instrument and one three-phase lead-set connection: 3-phase turns ratio, 3-phase winding resistance, auto vector detection, heat-run test, OLTC/continuity (make- before-break), core demagnetisation, magnetic balance/flux distribution, excitation current, polar- ity, and phase angle deviation. CYLINDRICAL SENSORS OFFER STRENGTH E ngineered for arduous conditions, the Leuze 328 series sensor is based on the optical platform of the well-known standard Leuze 318B series. However, the new device features a metal sleeve in the housing. The operational sensors available in the new Leuze cylindrical series, which range from throughbeam photoelectric sensors to retro- reflective photoelectric sensors to light scanners with sensitivity adjustment via teach button, are designed with the option of a cable or plug con- nection. An adjustable retro-reflective photoelec- tric sensor model with a polarisation filter is also available for tricky applications. With ranges of 1 m (light scanners), 6 m (ret- ro-reflective photoelectric sensors) and 15 m (throughbeam photoelectric sensors), Leuze cy- lindrical sensors are ideal for a variety of appli- cations for object detection in materials handling and packaging technology. The sensors are especially popular for integra- tion into constricted production facilities as well as into assemblies in transport systems or other machinery. In many production processes and in- ternal transport systems, the optical sensors are used for the detection of objects and thereby con- trol processes or partial steps. The highly visible light spot facilitates alignment and two antivalent outputs expand the application options. The Leuze sensors are available from Counta- pulse Controls, which has provided sensing solu- tions to business across southern Africa for over forty years. The Johannesburg based company operates a technical hotline to ensure that cus- tomers have ready access to relevant applications and operational information.

UPGRADE FAST-TRACKED AT MANUFACTURING PLANT

A wide-ranging upgrade of the electrical distribution net- work at a catalyst manufacturer’s plant near Johannes- burg has been successfully – and speedily – completed by Zest WEG Group companies led by Shaw Controls. According to Shaw Controls chief operating officer Bevan Richards, the work was efficiently coordinated between com- panies in the Zest WEG Group so that the contract could be fast-tracked during a special weekend shutdown to minimise the production disruption at the facility. “This major upgrade of the plant – which included the mov- ing and replacement of 17 transformers and 22 medium volt- age outdoor panels – had to be completed in just five days,” said Richards. “With careful planning and preparation, along with the close collaboration of the customer, we were even able to complete the job with a day to spare, allowing production to resume earlier than expected.” To meet these demanding timeframes, Shaw Controls pro- posed and implemented a solution that involved an E-house – a prefabricated walk-in modular enclosure to house switch- gear and auxiliary equipment – as well as two containerised substations, built in-house at the company’s ISO 9001 Bureau Veritas-certified manufacturing facility in Heidelberg. The E-house was equipped with free-issue medium voltage switchgear from the customer, and the substations were each equipped with a 400 V main distribution board. These modular solutions allow for assembly and testing in the factory, where customers can view the build progress and witness the perfor- mance of the finished product before delivery is finalised. “The medium voltage panel was installed, pre-tested, com- missioned and the relays programmed before delivery,” Rich- ards said. Once at the customer site, it was simply a matter of connecting the cables before getting the system ready to be re-energised. “Part of our project management role was to develop the design and construction drawings, working in conjunction with the cus- tomer’s consulting engineer,” he explained. “We brought in group companies WEG Transformers Africa (WTA) to provide two 3 MVA oil transformers that stepped down from 11 000 V to 400 V and EnI Electrical to conduct the on-site construction work, which in- cluded medium and low voltage supply, installation and termina- tion of cabling.” EnI Electrical received all equipment on site, undertaking substantial site preparation and pre-works prior to the plant shutdown. It then instituted a two-shift system of 12 hours each over the project period, while Shaw Controls was on-site providing overall project management. On the first day of the shutdown, with the assistance of a mobile 250 tonne crane, EnI Electrical was able to remove all the old equipment and place the new items in position ready for cabling to begin. Access to the work area was also constrained, requiring the crane to reach over an existing building. By the end of the project, 380 m of 11 kV cable had been laid, with two cable joints and seven terminations, as well as 1560 m of 400 V cable with 21 joints and 132 terminations. “A turnaround as fast as this is really only possible by us- ing the E-house and containerised substation option,” Richards said. “Delivering all the equipment in loose pieces and building everything on site, as well as the necessary re-testing, would take much longer and would involve considerably more produc- tion downtime for the factory.” The new system was designed by Shaw Controls and the consulting engineer to give the customer a highly stable system with flexibility in terms of how the loads are distributed to the plant.
