LIGHTING CONTROLS FOR ENERGY EFFICIENCY AND AESTHETICS LEGRAND’S range of Arteor wiring devices – which encompasses everything from simple switches to the most advanced home automation systems – also provides complete solutions for modern light- ing management. Legrand has combined stylish de- sign and leading-edge technology to create modern wiring devices with numerous functions and various finishes that meet the requirements of the most ba- sic electrical functions, as well as complicated and demanding automation tasks. What’s also notable about this range is users are able to ‘mix and match’ the design option and type of finish for any control function. The versatility of Arteor lighting controls enables users to create their own lighting scenarios, whether it is low illumination, bright lighting, or a cinema set- ting. Motion sensitive and automatic switches, as well as a new generation of dimmers, have not only been designed for elegance and flexibility, but also for enhanced energy efficiency. neutral wire, also accommodates easy replacement of a traditional switch. The system can have one or several push but- tons without neon, for on/off dimming control. Lights are programmed to come on again at the same lighting level as before they were last switched off.

With a nightlight function, the device is also suita- ble for bedrooms, particularly children’s rooms. Once switched on at a pre-set level (for example 33 %) the light will fade gradually for one hour, until it turns off completely. Devices for automatic or adaptable control of lighting in offices include skirting lights with a built- in detector, automatic switches and a lighting envi- ronment controller. The installation is enhanced by adding systems like access control, video, audio and data outlets, at the same time maintaining enhanced aesthetics. The Arteor range, which is compatible with South African socket and flush-mounting box standards,

Arteor universal dimmers optimise potential energy savings of modern lighting techniques, by enabling the dimming of all types of lamps. These universal push button dimmers are suitable for the control of light emitting diodes (LEDs) and compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs), as well as halogen and in- candescent lamps. These universal dimmers are fully modular for quick and easy installation in new buildings and in renovations. This two wire universal push button dimmer system, which can be installed without a

Legrand’s design team has worked with ‘the power of new ideas’ slogan to produce elegant, energy ef- ficient fittings, with a fine balance between function and form. To reinforce the high-end character of these de- vices, the most sophisticated and innovative mate- rials have been selected, giving Arteor a multi-cul- tural identity in line with its international positioning. These finishes include woven metal, red mirror and marine leather. Other finishes like plastic, metal, tat- too, wood and brushed steel are also available.

BEKA SCHRÉDER LAUNCHES HIGHLY VERSATILE AND ROBUST LED BULKHEAD

OSRAM, LEDVANCE TECHNOLOGY TO SHINE AT NEW EM LIGHTING DIVISION

BEKA Schréder has launched its most versatile and reliable industrial LED bulk- head luminaire: Optiway. It can be mount- ed on any structure, is highly robust and offers a high photometric performance. The Optiway utilises the latest LED technology and unique optical distribution that suits most lighting applications. Its small size and robust design will provide the necessary amount of light for any low- power bulkhead application. The Optiway is suitable for use in vari- ous industrial environments, which include underground haulage, outdoor mining ar- eas, oil and gas refineries, food and bever- age plants, manufacturing process plants and any application that requires a low power and robust luminaire. The uniquely designed optional Optilink plug-in system simplifies the installation process signifi- cantly, especially for underground mining applications. The high quality of light and the large range of input voltages make it possible to use this bulkhead for only 110 V ac sup- ply, 230 V ac or optionally ranging from 90-305 V ac. The design and choice of materials used make the Optiway highly vandal resistant.

T he latest luminaire technology from the global OSRAM and LEDVANCE partnership is now available locally through the new lighting divi- sion established by leading supplier ElectroMechanica (EM). LEDVANCE South Africa Marketing and Com- munications Manager James Clifford explains that partnering with EM was an attractive proposition as it offers a complete electrical range. In addition, EM’s economies-of-scale allow it to offer major discounts across a range of products. “As one of the largest suppliers of specialist electri- cal products in South Africa, it made absolute sense for us to launch a lighting division, as this allows us to offer a total solution to our project customers in particular,” says EM Lighting Division Manager, Vinson Moore. In order to ensure the smooth integration of the new lighting division into EM’s overall structure, Moore stresses that full training will be provided for wholesal- er staff, with two in-depth sessions already conducted at EM’s head office in Ormonde, Johannesburg. The successful establishment of the lighting divi- sion in February was the end result of a lengthy ne- gotiation process that began in August last year. “We were approached initially by EM and, owing to its repu- tation and size, we were more than open to the oppor- tunity this represented for us in the African market,” Clifford points out. The full-LED luminaires distributed by the division represent the latest trend in the lighting industry. In Europe, the ratio of luminaires to traditional lamps sold is 60:40, while in South Africa it is 10:90. There- fore a main aim of EM’s new lighting division is to educate the market about the advantages of full-LED luminaires. These include the fact that LEDS not only last long- er, but are also more durable and offer a better light quality. The technology is also highly energy-efficient, with Energy Star rated residential LEDs using 75% less energy and lasting 25 times longer than conven- tional incandescent lighting, for example. However, a major challenge – and opportunity – for

the new lighting division is to punt the benefits of LED to the broader African market. “It is critical to educate the market about these advantages, especially install- ers and project managers, in terms of the overall im- pact on the total cost of ownership,” Clifford notes. He adds that the African market remains price-sensitive, which means a focus on traditional lamps, as opposed to the longer-term cost-efficiency of LED. “We will be working closely with EM to introduce the latest technology and trends into the broader African market. For example, EM will have full access to our testing capabilities, whereby we can generate reports on any product failures, and flag any installation or manufacturing faults. This is in keeping with our global reputation for service and technical excellence,” says Clifford. The OSRAM and LEDVANCE partnership is a global leader in innovative lighting products and solu- tions, with EM’s new lighting division distributing about nine luminaire products at present. This range will be expanded as and when needed. “We will definitely be able to take advantage of the synergy between these two leading companies, which will allow us to introduce the latest products to the local market,” Moore stresses. These include complete or modular LED mod- ules that are fully integrated for ease of installation, in addition to lasting three to four times longer than the average, lamp, bulb or tube. “Our aim is to have LED retrofit replacement options available for any ap- plication, which also allows us to offer our customers total plug-and-play solutions for their specific require- ments,” Moore highlights. It is planned that the new lighting division will make quick inroads into the residential, commercial, industrial, and OEM market segments. The product range on offer for the residential market, in particu- lar, comprises tubes, general lights, downlights, bulbs, and floodlights for perimeter security. As a launch promotion, EM will run a special on standard slimline 600 mm x 600 mm and 1 200 mm x 600 mm ceil- ing LEDs and flood lights.

The Optiway consists of a polycarbon- ate or acrylic housing, which is sealed by means of a silicone gasket. The specially designed closing mechanism seals this luminaire permanently to IP 66 and pre- vents internal access, which would lead to damage and the reduction of the lifetime and performance of the luminaire. The newest LED technology has been utilised while limiting the maximum watt- age and the lumen output in order to opti- mise the thermal environment of the elec- tronic components. Thereby, the bulkhead is able to last at least 50 000 hours in the most extreme environment. Various mounting options, including a wall mounting bracket, hook bracket, or mounting by simply using a metal or plas- tic cable tie, make this luminaire a truly versatile low-power bulkhead.
