t is with great pleasure that the cidb presents the first annual Empowerment and Recognition

of Women in Construction Awards 2020. These Awards cement the cidb’s aim to fulfil and implement an integrated strategy for the reconstruction, growth and development of the construction industry. The cidb has identified women as a critical target for development and has chosen to celebrate and encourage this group through an industry awards process. Construction has traditionally been thought of as a male-dominated industry with very few female role models in the sector. Thanks to the cidb’s evolving concerted efforts to encourage women into the sector, through initiatives such as the gender agenda and transformation programmes, today we celebrate the

MESSAGE FROM THE STEERING COMMITTEE

T he Empowerment and Recognition of Women in of Women in Construction Awards (ERWIC Awards) is to encourage excellence among women and commitment among stakeholders to support women in their professional growth and development. It also aims to promote role models for women in lower grade construction categories and motivate women in the higher grades. The Steering Committee had a significant task at hand to formulate the categories, ensuring all aspects of the cidb registered membership could participate equitably. It was important to identify areas of the industry that needed inclusion and recognition – such as transformation, mentorship and, of course, majority female ownership. The committee agreed on some essential ground rules: Construction Awards saw its beginnings in 2019 when the concept was developed within the cidb, with the name and philosophy launched shortly after. The aim of the Empowerment and Recognition

Requirements of all entrants: • Entrants must be actively registered with the cidb, where appropriate. • Entrants must disclose BBBEE status. • Entered projects must be from African regions. • Entered projects must have been fully completed within the awards time period. This company has since 2014 been involved in hosting of intern students from TVET/FET colleges for experiential training. our expectations as the host company. After students’ selection, we place them according to their qualifications. For each site we allocate a mentor for each group of students who will assess their progress and ensure that their needs are met, like proper accommodation and timely receipt of their monthly stipends. “To ensure that our interns’ goals are met, a monthly report is submitted to the training provider who in turn submit our report to the respective SETAs. Since 2014 we have worked with HWSETA, CETA and Service SETA. “The monthly reports serve to provide feedback and suggestions to our interns and assist them in improving on their site duties, as we prepare them for job placement and to complete their studies. “At the end of the internship programme, the company provide the students with an experience certificate which clearly states the duration undertaken. “We also assist women-owned companies with lower cidb grading and who have just entered the construction industry on how to complete bids, sub-contracting and by entering into joint venture agreements for them to upgrade,” explains Mpe. 
